The National Honor Society at Kane Area High School held its annual Induction Ceremony on Tuesday evening at Olmsted Manor. The officers of the Honor Society include, left to right, seated: Melanie Geer, treasurer; Dawn Saquin, historian; and Christina Moore, vice president; standing: Makayla Anderson, secretary; Mary Filjones, teacher for the “gifted” program and adviser for the Honor Society; and Alison Packard, president. All students are seniors and are second-year members of the Honor Society.

Mt. Jewett Rotary Club presents program

At the Nov. 28 meeting of the Mt. Jewett Rotary Club Mike Barnard and Kristin Dillenbeck presented a program on the McKean County Community Service 3G Program. 3G stands for Good, Growing, Gardens. The motto of the program is “Helping others By Helping Ourselves.” The program provides a meaningful alternative to incarceration. Defendants who are placed in the program must complete a specified number of community service hours in order to fulfill the requirements of their probation. Participants in the program work at a number of locations throughout McKean County.

Donation to 'Toys for Kids'

Dan Jordan, the Worshipful Master of Kane Masonic Lodge 566, presents a check to Kane Republican Business Manager Cindy Hulings for the newspaper's Toys for Kids campaign. Anyone wishing to donate new, unwrapped toys or monetary donations may drop them off at the Kane Republican office on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The deadline for donations is Dec. 14. One hundred twenty-five children from birth through fifth grade from the Kane area are signed up to receive toys.

Accelerated Readers

The Kane Area Middle School October Accelerated Reader winners for the month of October are: (from left to right) Sarah Carlson, eighth grade; Dylan Mitchell, seventh grade; and Ty Stahli, sixth grade. Students who earn enough AR points for the month are entered into a drawing. Students win a basket of books, school supplies, and gift certificates from local businesses.

The Kane Area Middle School recognizes one male and one female student in grades 6, 7, and 8 that represent the characteristics of respect, responsibility, compassion, citizenship and honesty during each month of school. These characteristics are also the five Kane Area District Core Values. Congratulations to the following students for being selected as “Students of the Month” for November 2012: front row, Gina Marconi, seventh grade; Paige Nicklas, sixth grade; Neo Smith, sixth grade; back row, Brandi Wheatley, eighth grade; Hunter Zuzek, seventh grade; and Mike Landries, eighth grade.

Church hosts Super KWT

The Presbyterian Church of Kane hosted Super KWT (Kids Worshipping Together) on Nov. 14. Nineteen youth, 11 middle and high school helpers and 11 adults worked to make this event a success.

KAMS make "Care Packets"

November 21, 2012

KAMS student council students hold boxes of supplies for local soldiers overseas stationed in war zones. The Kane VFW coordinated with the KAMS student council to put together items for soldiers in "Care Packets" that contained toiletry items, snack, and reading materials such as books or magazines. There were seven local soldiers that these care packages will go to and the amount was large enough for the seven soldiers to receive care packages for several months.

Thanksgiving in a Box

Pictured are Kane Area Middle School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) students who were part of the "Thanksgiving in a Box" food drive that NJHS does every year around Thanksgiving. All of the students in KAMS homerooms are asked to put together a complete family dinner for 18 needy families in our school district. These dinners include turkeys, pies, stuffing, and all the items for a full course family dinner. The dinners are than delivered by KAMS faculty members after school to the families.

A community-wide Ecumenical Celebration of Thanksgiving was held Tuesday evening at the Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church on Greeves Street in Kane. Clergy from Kane participated in the service, which was sponsored by the Kane Area Ministerial Association. The group includes, left to right: the Rev. Senior Center honors veterans

The Kane Senior Center honored veterans on Tuesday with a program and certificates. The Rev. Nancy Page of Kane accompanied and led the seniors in some rousing patriotic songs. Poems and readings were done by Mabel Johnson, Beverly Sivak and Kathy Payne.
