Rotary hosts wrestlers

The Kane Rotary Club hosted members of the Kane High School wrestling team at a recent luncheon meeting at the First Presbyterian Church. The group includes, left to right: Evan DeLong, a state champion this year who is headed to Clarion University; Austin Woolcock; Cody Blankenship, a third-place finisher in the state tourney who is bound for Shippensburg University; Dr. Maryann Anderson, superintendent of the Kane Area School District and vice president of Rotary; Nate Moore; and Mike Swartwood, head wrestling coach at Kane High School.

Kendra Udovich, left, and Trinity Clark, right, broke records for the Kane Middle School track team recently. Udovich turned in a time of 28.24 in the 200-meter dash at the Sheffield Invitational last week, breaking Lacy Conant's record of 26.5 set in 2000. Clark broke two records at the same invitational, the shot put and javelin. Clark's throw of 36' 1/2" in the shot beat current KAHS senior Morgan Nicholson's mark of 35' 5 3/4", set in 2010. She also broke Taylor Detrick's record from 2009 in the javelin with a throw of 95' 8".

Local runners compete in half-marathon

On Sunday, May 4, approximately 30,000 runners took off from the corner of Liberty Avenue and Seventh Street in downtown Pittsburgh marking the start of the 2014 Pittsburgh Marathon and Half-Marathon. Runners came from 20 countries and 49 states to participate in the event. Dave Swanson of Kane and Will Keesler of Mt. Jewett were two of the 14,589 participants in the half-marathon covering a distance of 13.1 miles. Will finished the race in 1:57:38 and Dave came across the finish line in 2:19:07. Both Will and Dave are members of the Elk County Striders and run together on a regular basis.

AAU D9 Elite

The girls' AAU "D9 Elite" Travel Basketball team traveled to New York state recently and placed second in the Buffalo JamFest Tournament. The local girls won both of their games on Saturday, placing them at the top of their pool. On Sunday, they won their first game, advancing them to the championship game. The girls finished the weekend as the Runner-Ups, losing to a tough and physical team from Canada.

Aiden Hulings gets his hand raised after defeating Tavion Banks of Easton in the state semifinals on Saturday. Hulings, a seventh-grader at Kane Middle School (not eighth grade as previously reported), won the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling 11-and-12-year-old title at 125 pounds.

Members of the Kane boys' track team enjoyed a relatively warm, sunny day on Friday for their daily workout. The spring sports season gets underway on Monday, March 24. The softball team is scheduled to host Brockway, while the baseball team will play there on the same day. The Kane track and field teams are scheduled to kickoff their season on Tuesday, March 25, when they host Northern Potter.
