Old-timers baseball game

July 27, 2014

Kane's 150th Celebration kicked off yesterday with the playing of an Old-timers baseball game at Glenwood Park's Pat Santilli Field. The game, played under the rules of 1864, was contested by teams of former Kane Independents, Kane Legion and Kane High School baseball players. Harry Whittemore, shown getting ready to deliver a pitch here during the game, was one of the former local all-stars to take part in the game. Hundreds of fans attended the nail-biter, which ended up 9-8.

3-on-3 youth basketball

Pictured are the winners of this week's 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament which was sponsored by Ronald McDonald Funeral Home. Members of the winning squad are, from left to right, Mason Zuzek, Austin Pierson and Andy Jekeliek. Next week's tournament will take place on Friday, Aug. 1 from 1-3 p.m. at the courts in Evergreen Park.

Pittsburgh Pirate night

The Kane Area Little League's 11- and 12-year-old All-Star team are pictured before a game earlier this summer. The team decided to have a Pittsburgh Pirate night where each player wore a Pirate T-shirt or jersey. Team camp

The Kane high school boys basketball team recently participated in a two-day team camp at clarion university. The team has had numerous events to improve their skills this summer including daily workouts, traveling to play games at ECC, DCC, and a Tuesday Sheffield league. Boys basketball and evergreen basketball court summer activities will wrap up in two weeks as these student athletes enter their fall sports seasons.

Cole Young

Cole Young, pictured here, won the 2014 Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run Championship for his division, 9-and-10- year-old boys, at Minnesota's Target Field on Monday. Cole, who lives outside of Pittsburgh, is the son of former Kane resident Jo Anne (Kocjancic) Young and the grandson of Millie Kocjancic of Kane and the late Joe Kocjancic.

Big 30 Classic

Practices for the Big 30 Classic All-Star Football game began yesterday in Bradford. The Kane Wolves will be well represented on the 2014 Pennsylvania squad. A total of seven players were selected to compete in the game.

Photo by The Pennsylvania Section 1 Senior Baseball Tournament got underway on Wednesday. The Mt Jewett Little League is hosting the event, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday at the Mt Jewett Legion field. Wednesday's first round games pitted Cranberry versus The Mets (from Crawford County) and District 10 Champions St. Marys taking on District 3 winners Corry. Crawford County, with one of their players shown scoring here in the first inning, defeated Cranberry 6-1, while St Marys defeated Corry 9-6 in the 6 p.m. game.
