The Central District Volunteer Firemen's Association (CDVFA) has presented an award for valor to Lane Bennett (right) of Milesburg (Centre County). Lane was only 10 years old last November when he drove a Jeep a quarter mile to reach his grandfather, Michael Bennett (left) of Julian (Centre County), after the 53-year-old man suffered a heart attack. The two had been hunting together when the elder Bennett was stricken. The youth walked through the woods in the dark to reach the parked Jeep and drive it back to evacuate his ailing grandfather.

The Queen Contest took place at the Kane Middle School auditorium as part of the CDVFA's three-day convention in Kane. The Battle of the Barrel is one of the most popular events at the 119th annual Central District Volunteer Fire Department (CDVFA) convention in Kane. Opposing teams of firemen squirt water Friday afternoon to advance an old beer keg linked to a cable strung on Wetmore Avenue. The team that moves the keg the furthest distance on the cable in a specific time is the winner.

Lea Earley (left), the reigning Miss Kane High, was one of five contestants in the Queen Contest at the fair. Earley is the daughter of Frank and Elaine Alcorn of Mt. Jewett and Raymond Earley of Ellicottville, N.Y. Lauren Stratton (right) of Smethport was named as the first runner-up in the Queen Contest.
Baylee Swanson holds a trophy after being named Sunday evening as the queen of the Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival. Baylee, 13, is the daughter of Deb and Paul Swanson of 141 W. Main St., Mt. Jewett. Taking part in the crowning ceremony are, left to right: Ashley Swanson, the 2010 Swedish Festival queen; Baylee Swanson, this year's queen; Ally Carpenter, chairman of the Queen Contest; and Haley Williams, first runner-up in this year's queen contest. Carpenter was chosen as the Swedish Festival queen in 2005. In 2008, she was named as Miss Kane High and also was crowned as Miss McKean County.
