Adventures of a Wildlife Photographer - "Cardinals"

November 11, 2013

I often talk about Blue Jays and how I like them. There are many people that can’t stand Blue Jays and I can understand that. They are big, loud, and can be rather intimidating. I still think that they are a beautiful bird with a bad rap, and deserve another look. Although I like the Jays, they often show up at my feeder when I’m trying to photograph my “real” favorite bird, the Cardinal.

Wolves advance to D9 finals with win over Brookville

November 9, 2013

The Kane Wolves improved to 11-0 but more importantly earned a spot in next weekend’s District 9 AA finals with a hard fought 26-12 win over Brookville on Friday. Playing on a sloppy field at Kane’s Paul R Miller Stadium, the Wolves put together a workman like effort to defeat the Raiders, who entered the game with a 6-4 record.
The Wolves’ defense started out hot, forcing the Raiders to punt after three plays, including a tackle for a loss on second down by Evan DeLong on District 9’s second leading rusher Zach Vroman.

Wolves face Raiders in D9 playoff opener

November 8, 2013

The 10-0 Kane Wolves host the 6-4 Brookville Raiders on Friday night in a District 9 AA semifinal game. The records mean little, however, as the two teams have no common opponents in 2013. The winner of the game advances to next week’s district finals, while the loser’s season comes to a close.

Monday was a good day for Muncy man

November 8, 2013

QUEHANNA – Standing in the parking lot at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's elk check station in Quehanna on Monday afternoon, the words on Muncy resident Jeff Trought's Duck Dynasty-themed T-shirt perfectly described how he was feeling: "Happy, happy, happy."
Hunting in Elk Hunt Zone 4, the majority of which is located in Cameron County, and guided by Cody Ball of Hicks Run Outfitters, Trought had harvested an impressive looking 8x8 bull elk earlier that morning.

Luck results in first-time applicant being drawn for bull tag

November 7, 2013

QUEHANNA – The 86 individuals drawn for elk licenses in this year's drawing represented only a small fraction of the 22,331 hunters who applied. Additionally, many of those individuals had been applying for years and had accrued a number of preference points, resulting in 116,734 entries being in this year's drawing.
Given those numbers the odds of a first-time applicant being selected, much less for one of the 26 available bull tags, seemed to be slim, but that is exactly what happened for Catawissa resident William Gifford.

November 6, 2013

HERSHEY – Amidst abundant sunshine and beautiful weather in southwest Pennsylvania, the Kane Wolves cross country team finished 14th at this weekend’s PIAA cross country championships in Hershey.

Export man harvests 7x7 bull elk

November 6, 2013

QUEHANNA – When Randy Caldwell's friends first called him to tell him he had been drawn for a bull elk license in this year's weeklong elk hunt he thought they were playing a practical joke on him.
The Export native recalled that he was in disbelief at first after friends told him they saw in the paper that his name had been drawn.

November 5, 2013

QUEHANNA – As of just after 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon a total of 17 elk had been brought to the Pennsylvania Game Commission's elk check station in Quehanna. The animals were all harvested on the opening day of this year's elk hunt and consisted of seven bulls and 10 cows. The 17 tags were among 86 awarded to hunters this year, with 26 tags being drawn for antlered elk and 60 for antlerless.
