September 5, 2012

The Kane Lady Wolves volleyball team looked like they were going to make it a quick night in their season opener against St Marys, winning the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-10. The Lady Dutch, however, were not anxious to leave Kane and won the next two sets by a scores of 25-23, setting up the fifth and final set. The home team trailed 14-11 at one point, but rallied to win the set 16-14 to win the match and start the season 1-0.

In the middle school races, Kane would not be able to field full teams for the outing, resulting in 50-15 losses.

It was a tale of two halves in Tuesday’s season opener for the Kane Wolves boys soccer team.

The Todd Silfies’ chapter of the Kane Wolves’ football story began with a bang on Friday night as they battled to a 35-13 win over visiting Sheffield.
The Wolves jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter against the Sheffield Wolverines and saw the visitors cut the score to 14-7 midway through the third quarter.
The Kane players regrouped, however, and responded with 21 straight points before Sheffield scored a touchdown with no time on the clock to give Kane the 35-13 win.

Lady Wolves volleyball team looks for playoff return

August 31, 2012

Last year’s Kane Lady Wolves volleyball team was in an unusual place during last year’s District 9 playoffs—home. For the first time in 17 seasons, head coach Judy Kessler’s squad missed out on a chance to earn a spot to the state playoffs.
With a record of 7-9, they were close, and with a number of key starters returning with an additional year of experience, Kessler is looking forward to making the playoffs once again.

Lady Wolves’ soccer team has quality, Not quantity

August 31, 2012

Third-year Kane girls’ soccer coach Allie Saquin has eight returning letterwinners from last year’s 7-9 team. That is the good news. The bad news is that there are only 13 girls on the roster.
With 11 girls on the field at a time, depth could be a serious problem for the Lady Wolves.
Saquin will be patrolling the sidelines along with assistant coaches Jeff Gibbs, in his second season, and new volunteer assistant Robynn Boyer. The returning letterwinners are Dawn Saquin, Taylor Bucheit, Haylee Mague, Brittany Kowatch, Shyanne Todd, Kelsey Johnson, Sara Mohney, and Andrea Walker.

Coach Silfies ready to continue Wolves’ football tradition

August 31, 2012

Change is in the air for the Kane Wolves’ football program. While there may be new coaches, Wolves’ head coach Todd Silfies does not expect any big changes in style of football. The biggest change is the addition of freshmen to the high school football roster. This means that there will be 55 players on the sideline on game nights, a big jump from previous seasons.
Fourteen ninth-graders are on the team this year. According to Silfies, a number of other AML teams also made the same move.

Wolves cross country teams ready to run

August 31, 2012

The Kane Cross Country runners look to follow up a successful 2011 season as they move up a classification in District 9.
Two members of last year’s boys team and two members of last year’s girls team ran in the PIAA tournament, and head coach Adam Smelko and his assistants Rich Hunt and Matt Gasbarre are hoping to have even more Wolves make the trip this season.
Senior captain Avery Colson will lead the way for the Wolves. Colson was one of the two runners from the boys’ team to run at states, along with Jon Gelsick. Chris Hunt is the other captain of the boys’ team.
