I was now awakening to my first full day in Katmai National Park in southwestern Alaska. I had finally seen some monster Alaskan brown bears in their natural habitat. The weather had held out, being cool and very comfortable with temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s. I was enjoying Mother Nature’s air conditioning, unaware of the near 100-degree temperatures both in Kane and in the lower 48 for July 2011.
