AmeriCorps—called “a domestic Peace Corps”—has assigned three local women to tutor and mentor students in the Kane Area School District.
The three include:
*Kathleen Prosperi of Kane, who is based at the high school.
*Ashley Mix of Mt. Jewett, who is assigned to the elementary school.
*Kathy Long of Kane, who works with students at the middle school and elementary schools.
“All three are full-time AmeriCorps volunteers,” Dr. Maryann Anderson, Kane school superintendent, said. “It’s a wonderful program.”
As director of student services and personnel in her previous job in the Millcreek Township School District near Erie, Anderson said she frequently tapped the AmeriCorps program.
“I’ve been familiar with the AmeriCorps program since the late ‘90s,” Anderson said. “It’s a great resume-building program for the participants.”
Anderson credits Melanie Clabaugh, the executive director of the Kane Area Development Center, for exploring the possibility of using AmeriCorps participants in the Kane School District.
“Melanie made the contacts,” Anderson said.
Although they’re called “volunteers,” the AmeriCorps participants receive a “living allowance” of $12,600 for a one-year commitment to the program and are covered by health and dental insurance.
After completing service hours, trainings and paperwork, the participants also qualify for an “education award” of $5,550. The participants also receive three credits for Online Service-Learning Training provided by Clarion University.
