Another appeal made to change timber value

July 24, 2012

Jim Herzog

SMETHPORT – Within a month, Jim Herzog of Smethport again will be appealing the assessment on his timber land in McKean County.
A notice he received earlier this month from the county assessment office shows that the value for “Clean and Green” forest reserve properties is $255 per acre.
Herzog, however, claims that all forest properties under the “Clean and Green (C&G)” program should be valued at only $94 per acre.
Earlier this month, Herzog called for the McKean County Board of Commissioners to rescind a resolution that sets the $255 value for forest properties in the C&G program. He made another appeal Tuesday at a commissioners’ meeting at the county courthouse in Smethport to change this number.
According to Herzog, the resolution adopted by the commissioners “violates the clear rules of assessment laws.”
“Please request the Assessment Office to correct the misapplied values immediately and assess the use value of $94 for all enrolled C&G properties,” he said Tuesday in a statement read at the meeting.
Angie Tennies, the chief assessor for the county, said notices of changed assessments went out earlier this month. She said these county property owners have until Aug. 20 to file appeals.
Other property owners who wish to appeal their current unchanged assessments have until Sept 1 to file documents at the county assessor’s office in Smethport, she said.
