Hezbollah fighters, their guns blazing, seized control of west Beirut on Friday after three days of street battles with pro-government foes pushed Lebanon dangerously close to all-out civil war. At least 11 people have been killed and dozens wounded in the fighting that dramatically escalated on Thursday after Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said a government crackdown on his powerful militant group was a declaration of war. |

Myanmar's ruling junta are pressing ahead with a referendum on constitutional changes on Saturday despite the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis. The international community has urged the regime to postpone the ballot, the first in nearly two decades, as up to 100,000 people are feared dead in the worst-hit region of the southwest. |
