The Central District Volunteer Firemen's Association (CDVFA) has presented an award for valor to Lane Bennett (right) of Milesburg (Centre County). Lane was only 10 years old last November when he drove a Jeep a quarter mile to reach his grandfather, Michael Bennett (left) of Julian (Centre County), after the 53-year-old man suffered a heart attack. The two had been hunting together when the elder Bennett was stricken. The youth walked through the woods in the dark to reach the parked Jeep and drive it back to evacuate his ailing grandfather. The boy had only learned how to operate the Jeep the day before the incident Nov. 30, 2010. The CDVFA presented the valor award Friday during its Awards Program at the Kane Middle School auditorium.
