SMETHPORT – The area economy may be in the doldrums, but the sounds of new construction soon will be heard in both Kane and Mt. Jewett.
The McKean County Planning Commission acted Tuesday to approve plans for four more major construction projects-- two in Kane, one in Mt. Jewett and one in Wetmore Township.
The projects include:
*A Family Dollar variety store at a site along North Fraley Street in Kane adjacent to the Rite Aid drug store and in front of the Kane Screens building.
*A truck garage for Mike Kocjancic Trucking along Wetmore Avenue near Poplar Street in Kane.
*A dental and primary care clinic for the Bradford Regional Medical Center at a site along West Main Street in Mt. Jewett.
*A truck garage at the Northwest Land Development off Route 6 in Wetmore Township west of Kane.
The planning commission last month approved two other Mt. Jewett projects.
Those projects include:
*A Kane Community Hospital plan for a physician's office at a vacant lot along West Main Street near the Mt. Jewett Post Office.
*A plan by local contractor Brian Sees to develop a condominium and eight apartments in the former Mt. Jewett Elementary School along West Main Street.
Douglas Barmoy of Hanover Land Services presented plans Tuesday for the Family Dollar store. The project calls for the construction of a 100x80-foot building on the 1.3-acre parcel just south of the Rite Aid store in the vacant lot in front of Kane Screens, also known as Kane Manufacturing.
The site will have 27 parking spaces, Barmoy said.
The planning commission gave preliminary plan approval for the project. The board also gave "conditional" final approval based on the preparation of a stormwater management plan.
Barmoy said plans calls for the installation of underground stormwater storage containers that will empty by gravity into the borough's storm drains.

Seriously? And what jobs is this going to create for the people of Kane? What business and money is this going to bring Kane? No more excuses, what about the Affiliated, Kane Handle, Stackpole, Holgate, etc, etc. properties that should and need to be used by and for the people of Kane. Let real businesses in for once and let Kane residents have jobs for once.

Although I am still quite upset about the whole situation with the Mt Jewett Elemetary school, it's nice to see things being done to improve both towns. Good luck.
