MT. JEWETT – Where there's a need, there's a way to fill it.
That's the philosophy of the Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC), which held a ceremony Friday to mark the opening the new Mt. Jewett Health Center on West Main Street.
Timothy J. Finan, president and chief executive officer of BRMC and the Upper Allegheny Health System, said the construction of the Mt. Jewett facility is "a response to enhance access to patients we serve."
"We're responding to a need," he said.
"We serve a large geographical area," Finan said. He said "it makes sense" to bring a health care center to "the people we serve." He said it's a "big imposition," especially in the winter months, for BRMC patients to travel "30 or 40 miles" to obtain health care.
"We're thrilled to be here," Finan said. "This is a wonderful center and a great day for us."
The state-of-the-art Mt. Jewett Health Center is located at 122 W. Main St. (Route 6) across from the intersection of Campbelltown Road.
The center offers three types of the services in the one-story building. Services include:
*Dental care. Dr. Dongwuk Cha heads a team of dental professionals, using the newest procedures to ensure quality dental care.
Dental services hours include: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For appointments, call 975-1195.
*Primary care. Judy Flynn, a certified registered nurse practitioner, provides health care to children and adults. She is a Mt. Jewett resident.
Primary care hours include: Monday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For appointments, call 975-1188.
*OB/GYN. Dr. Alex Batchev provides obstetric and gynecological services at the center. Kim Garcia, a certified nurse midwife, also is on duty at the center.
OB/GYN services are offered Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. For appointments, call 975-1188.
Finan said the dental care program is expected to be the most popular service offered at the Mt. Jewett Health Center.
He said about 60 patients already have made appointments for dental care at the Mt. Jewett site.
"We've hit a home run right out of the box," Finan said in reference to the number of appointments for dental care.
The dental care suite in the complex features an “intra-oral” camera, which resembles a wand. The camera is placed inside the mouth and the image is shown on a computer screen. The device enables patients to see their dental problems before and after the dentist fixes them.
Other speakers at the ceremony included David Kobis, senior vice president and chief operating officer at BRMC, and Mt. Jewett Mayor Robin LeViere.
Kobis called the center "a fabulous job."
"We're extremely happy and proud to be here,” Kobis said. “We’re filling a real void with our dental care service.”
Kobis said the establishment of the BRMC Mt. Jewett Health Center was “as good of a process as possible.” He said it took between “six to seven months from start to finish” to build the multi-room complex.
He said the project was “on time and on budget.”
LeViere said the health center “definitely is an asset to Mt. Jewett.” He said he is “real happy” that the project is completed and sees it as “an economic benefit” to the borough.
