Clifford Melvin Martinson

July 27, 2011

Clifford Melvin Martinson, 105, died Tuesday morning, July 26, 2011, at the Kane Community Hospital. He had recently resided at the Lutheran Home at Kane and prior to that in Mt. Jewett for several years. Until his wife passed away, he had lived in Kane.
Born in Kane on Feb 23, 1906, he was the son of the late Sven and Minnie (Gibson) Martinson, both natives of Sweden.
Mr. Martinson had worked in local glass plants, at Kane Manufacturing, and also at Bentz Furniture as a carpet installer, until his retirement at the age of 80. He also found time to work as a house painter and carpenter and in 1939, in Kushequa, he worked as a caretaker for E. Kent Kane.
After his wife Lucille passed away, he moved to an apartment in Mt. Jewett where he would take his daily walk. Neighbors would leave chairs on their lawns for him to rest when needed. Cliff was self-sufficient in his apartment until April of last year when he moved to the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Clifford and Lucille were married on March 4, 1926 and celebrated 72 years together until her passing on May 27, 1998.
Surviving relatives include three daughters; Shirley West of Illinois, Dottie (Larry) Mossing of Ohio and Joyce (Vic) Peterson of Lantz Corners; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and one grandson, Craig Peterson.
Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Mt. Jewett  where funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev.
