SMETHPORT – Wetmore Township voters now will cast their ballots at the First Baptist Church complex at Hemlock Avenue and Route 321 near Kane Area High School.
In the past, township residents have voted at the township building along Spring Street in East Kane.
The McKean County Board of Commissioners acted Tuesday to move the Wetmore polling place from the township building to the church.
According to the resolution endorsed by Commissioners Joe DeMott of Port Allegany, Al Pingie of Bradford Township and Cliff Lane of Annin Township, the Wetmore town building “no longer can accommodate the flow of voters.”
The resolution points out that the church “has been surveyed and complies with the “Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act.”
The section of the church building for voting has a ramp for persons confined to wheelchairs. The parking lot at the church also is much larger than the parking area at the township building.
The measure directs Judy Ordiway, director of the county Board of Elections, to “take any and all steps necessary to implement this polling location change.”
The switch in Wetmore Township polling places is expected to go into effect with the primary election Tuesday, April 24.
In other business at the 22-minute meeting at the courthouse in Smethport, the commissioners:
*Approved a property tax exemption for the Bradford Area School School District for .06 acres of land and a building at 26 Willard Ave., Bradford.
The school district plans to demolish the building, it was noted.
