SMETHPORT – McKean County plans to seek applicants for a newly-created position of personnel director.
Joe DeMott, chairman of the county Board of Commissioners, announced Tuesday that the board is nearly ready to advertise for applicants for the position.
His announcement came at a meeting of the commissioners. After the meeting, DeMott said the commissioners would be ready to "interview" applicants for the job "next month."
The county Salary Board voted 5-0 last week to create the new position.
County Commissioners DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane joined with Acting Treasurer Mary Jo Sherwood and County Controller Tom Ball to create the position at the Salary Board meeting.
The Salary Board did not establish a salary for the new position, Ball said Tuesday.
The county has been without a personnel chief for four years. Heidi Boser of Bradford held the position of "human resources representative" for the county from June 2006 to February 2008.
Boser, a 1994 graduate of Mount Union College, now works in human resources for the American Refining Group (ARG) of Bradford. She also is a former personnel officer for the Minard Run Oil Company of Bradford.
When Boser left her county job in 2008, the county position she held paid $32,000 per year, Ball said.
DeMott said the commissioners have handled personnel issues in the absence of a personnel director.
The new personnel director will oversee the post of county employee "benefits coordinator." Brenda Goodwill of Smethport now holds this position at an annual salary of $30,940, Ball said.
Goodwill has held the position of "benefits coordinator" since the departure of Boser in 2008. Goodwill, who has held various jobs in the county government for 13 years, is a native of Port Allegany. The former Brenda Starr is a 1988 graduate of Port Allegany High School.
She and her husband, Dean have two daughters-- Olivia, 13; and Chloe, 8.
As "benefits coordinator," Goodwill handles paperwork involving life insurance, health insurance and retirement for about 240 county employees.
In other business at the 16-minute meeting at the county courthouse, the commissioners:
