PUNXSUTAWNEY – In recent Cross country action, the Varsity boys lost to the Punxsutawney Chucks 18-41.
“We just got out-gunned,” said head coach Adam Smelko. “They had a lot of guys in the middle of their pack we couldn’t come back from that, even though we ran pretty well.”
Avery Colson led the way for the Wolves, with a time of 19:42, just getting out kicked for fourth place. Chris Hunt followed in fifth place in 19:53, but that would be the last Wolf to pass the finish line for another 45 seconds, allowing Punxsy to pour in another four runners, effectively sealing the victory. Jon Gelsick and Bailey Colson were Kane’s next runners finishing at 20:25 and 21:04 respectively. Both performances were season bests.
Rounding out the top five for the Wolves was Dan Blackmore in 22:56, giving the Wolves a 41 point team score. Other performances included Joel Strandburg, setting a personal best in 23:47, Jack Ball 23:49, Andrew Swartwood 24:42 and Justin Hunt 33:13.
In the girls’ varsity race, Kristin Boyer led the way for the lady wolves, coming in at 26:05, closely followed by Taylor Beimel in 26:13.
“The kids did a pretty decent job on a hot day and any PRs we set today are almost in spite of our training anyway,“ Smelko said. “We’ve been hitting things pretty hard and should be getting faster the more we progress through the season.“
