Edward Joseph Kisko, 83, of 15 Beech St., died Friday evening, June 3, 2011, at the Lutheran Home at Kane, after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Ludlow on Jan. 31, 1928, the son of Anna Baronak Kisko and George Kisko. On June 14, 1969, at St. Callistus Church, he married Laurea Holt, who survives.
Mr. Kisko served in the 33rd Field artillery Battalion in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany. At the conclusion of the War, he worked at Holgate Toy Factory, Townline Motors, Jacobus-Poklar Motors and Helen Marie Candies in Kane. He later worked for Kane Gas Light & Heating Company for 27 years until his retirement.
He was renowned as a late model race car driver in the 1950s and 1960s. Mr. Kisko’s most successful racing year was 1962; he was Points Champion at Eriez Speedway and claimed the Stateline-Eriez circuit championship. He was also the 1956 Points Runner-Up at Highland Speedway and 1962 Points Runner-Up at Stateline Speedway. Although he raced primarily at Stateline and Eriez Speedways, he also circled the ovals at Skyline, Highland, Shippenville, Dickey-Ben, Smethport, Coon Road, Bradford, Cuba Lake and Olean before ending his 14-year racing career in 1968.
He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and motorcycle riding.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Steven Edward Kisko, of Queens, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret (Sherwood) Anderson of Kane; and 22 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends will be received Monday, June 6, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Kane. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wilcox, with the Rev.
