Gary Wayne Powell
Gary Wayne Powell, 61, a 1967 graduate of Hornell Senior High School, died on April 15, 2011 in San Francisco after a two year battle with brain cancer.
Â He was born on Aug. 29, 1949 in North Hornell. Gary was the second of three sons born to Bob and Elsa (Hartman) Powell, both formerly of Kane. His parents predeceased him. Gary is survived by two brothers: Bob Jr. (and Hsiao-Ping Moore) of Birmingham, Mich. and Scott Lee (and Jane Powell) of Rochester, N.Y.; three nephews, Aaron (and Marisa Powell), Collin, and Matthew Moore; two nieces, Jessica Bowen (and Mike Bowen) and Amy; and one great niece, Nora Powell.Â
Gary graduated from the University of Rochester in 1971 and the University of Buffalo in 1976. He was a licensed Occupational Therapist and was widely known in the San Francisco Bay Area for his work in geriatrics, adolescent autism, Aspergers syndrome, and dysphagia. He was active in the Sai Baba Center and was a life member of the Thomas Wolfe Society. Throughout his life and career, Gary sought new ways of thinking, experiencing, believing, and caring. These he embraced, and implemented in all aspects of his professional practice, and his personal and spiritual life. This rare man was above all else a healer and giver.
Â Friends may attend a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Kane, with the rev. William LaVelle, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Kane, officiating.
