By a 5-1 vote, the Kane Borough Council has re-elected Howard Kane as its president for 2012.
The election took place Tuesday at council's annual reorganizational meeting at the borough building on Bayard Street.
Councilwomen Janet Bard and Holly Harris and Councilmen Bill Tunall and Dennis Drost supported Kane for the position.
Councilman John Gentilman cast the lone negative vote.
By 6-0 votes, council elected Bard as vice president and Drost as president pro tem. He will conduct meetings in the absence of both Kane and Bard.
In the absence of Mayor Doug Caldwell, Bard opened the reorganizational meeting and asked for nominations for council president. Kane presided for the balance of the meeting after he was re-elected as president.
Due to the death of veteran Councilman Jim Salvamoser last month, council now has only six members.
The borough is seeking "letters of interest" from Kane residents who wish to serve on council. Letters will be accepted at the borough office until Jan. 23.
Council is expected to fill the vacancy when it meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1. This forum will serve as the regular monthly meeting for February. Action on a final budget for 2012 also is expected at this meeting.
In other business at the reorganizational meeting, council:
*Appointed Smethport attorney Tony Alfieri as the borough solicitor.
*Named KLH Engineers of Pittsburgh as consulting engineers for the borough.
*Re-appointed Lori Feldbauer as secretary-treasurer for the borough. She is the borough office manager.
