Johnsonburg man sought in Wetmore Twp. theft

February 27, 2012

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Johnsonburg man who is charged in the theft of more than $6,000 in minted coins and currency from a garage in Wetmore Township.
Travis Allen O'Conner, 29, of 338 Water St., Johnsonburg, is charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property, both felonies.
State Police Trooper Michael Britton placed the charges following an investigation of the alleged theft at the Gary Lee Anderson residence in Wetmore Township..
Documents filed with Kane District Judge Dave Engman show that the defendant had recently performed work at the Anderson residence and entered a garage to use the bathroom.
Court record show that the St. Marys Police Department "had an encounter" with O'Conner, who was found with minted coins. Photos of the coins were sent to the Kane State Police station near Lantz Corners. Anderson reportedly identified the coins in the photos as "identical" to some missing from his property, court documents indicate.
When questioned by police, O'Conner allegedly said the coins were his and that he "didn't rob anybody," court documents show. The defendant also told police that he "threw the coins in a dam because he heard that the coins were stolen," court records show.
