While there's plenty of room for improvement, it appears Kane schools are doing a good job in meeting the educational needs of the community.
This point was made Thursday during the presentation of progress reports by the school district's three building principals-- Linda Lorenzo, elementary school; Jim Fryzlewicz, middle school; and Jeff Kepler, high school.
The school board's Curriculum Committee heard the reports during its public meeting in the conference room at the District Administration Office along Hemlock Avenue. No one from the public attended the open forum.
The multi-page reports sum up certain "school metrics"-- test results and graphs used to measure the performance and activities for the three schools.
"If we don't know where we're at, we can't move forward," District Curriculum Principal Natalie Miller-Martini said in reference to the summaries outlined by the building principals.
Harry Steele, chairman of the Curriculum Committee that includes school board members Dick Coleman and Stephanie Eckstrom, indicated that the "metrics" will help guide the board in providing tools to improve education in the district.
"What can we do to help you?" Steele asked the principals.
A major indicator of student achievement is testing under the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). The annual tests, which are on the horizon, determine whether students are attaining proficient levels in math, reading, writing and science.
The PSSA test scores also indicate whether schools are making "annual yearly progress" (AYP) under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program.
