Kane boys finish 2nd at Kane Invite

April 22, 2012

Photo by Keith Reigel – Nate Moore gets a good start in the 300m hurdles at the Kane Track & Field Invitational this past Saturday. Moore would go on and set a new PR of 43.06, good for a third-place finish. That is a great time considering all the bad weather we had all day long.

On a very dreary day the Kane Invitational track meet was held this past Saturday. The Kane boys track team finished with 65 points, which was good enough for runner-up honors to Port Allegany’s 67 points, who won the team championship.
Kane was lead on the track by first-place finisher Avery Colson in the 3200-meter run, who literally ran away from the field in a 10:30 clocking. Avery is our top distance man, and he showed why Saturday. He also ran an outstanding anchor leg in the 3200 relay with a 2:04 split. He along with Jon Gelsick, Chris Hunt, and Ryan Peterson placed fifth with a team time of 8:56.
Jon-Luke Gelsick came back later in the meet and had a great run in the 3200 meter as did Avery with a third-place finish in a personal best, and district qualifying time of 10:50.02. Bailey Colson just missed placing in the 1600 and is coming on strong in that event with a personal best of 5:01. This young distance crew is fast becoming the strength of this year’s team on the track and that is due in large part to two factors; they are all working extremely hard at every workout and they have a great young distance coach in Adam Smelko who has the right workout ready for them every day.
Our distance crew is enthusiastic, and ready to run at every practice from top to bottom and that starts at the top with our athletes really buying into Coach Smelko’s system. They know they still have work to do in the next several weeks for their times to continue to drop but I like the attitude of this group and I’m sure they’ll continue to work hard to reach their goals.  In the sprints Will Carley placed third in the 100 at 12.13 and he also had a good day third in the triple jump with a leap of 39’.
