Kane council tables purchase of more anti-skid

April 12, 2012

Photo by Ted Lutz The Kane Borough Police Department has announced that it will issue violation notices to borough property-owners who allow junk to accumulate. Police Officer Derrick Snyder recently directed Jean Powley to remove this pile of junk at the rear of her property at 526-528 Biddle St.

A mild winter has left Kane and many other area communities with piles of unneeded anti-skid material that is spread on slippery roads.
Kane’s “mountain” of unused anti-skid is located at the Streets Department storage site near the rear of the fire hall on Poplar Street.
With plenty of anti-skid still on hand, the Kane Borough Council voted 7-0 Monday to table bids received for 1,000 tons for the 2012-13 winter season.
Council President Howard Kane joined with Councilwomen Janet Bard and Holly Harris and Councilmen John Gentilman, Bill Tunall, Harold Hallberg and Dennis Drost to table the bids.
IA Construction of Franklin submitted the low bid of $12.50 per ton. Bucktail Excavators of St. Marys was next with a bid of $13.42 per ton. Gernatt Gravel Products of Collins, N.Y. bid $13.95 per ton.
Taking the lowest bid, the borough would be spending $12,500 for more anti-skid.
During the meeting, Jean Swanson of 323 Kearney St. asked council why it plans to buy 1,000 tons since much of last year’s purchase still is piled up.
She wondered why the borough couldn’t buy only what it used up this past winter.
Kane said council traditionally buys its anti-skid in the spring “before prices go up.”
Mayor Doug Caldwell said the borough should consider a joint purchase with Wetmore Township to save money.
Meanwhile, the borough’s anti-skid bids are in abeyance.
