Kane earns first place in cheerleading competition

January 30, 2012

ST. MARYS – The Kane Varsity Competition Cheerleading team travelled to the Elk County Catholic Cheer Frenzy on Saturday and came home with first in the varsity division as well as the Judges Choice Award for the entire competition.
The past week was a very difficult week for the team as they lost a vital member due to an injury. One of the team’s youngest members, an alternate, Dana Swartwood, had to step in and fill the void. The alternates are like the bench in other sports in that they learn the routine and may never get the opportunity to step in, but come to practice every day.
Another member, Delaney Oertly also had to learn a new part as well. The group worked hard through one practice to learn all their new positions and deserve high praise for making things work. The rest of the team also stepped up their game as well, hitting stunts they have yet to hit all season long.
