Kane High Alumni Memorial Award board meets

June 20, 2012

The Kane High School Alumni Memorial Award (KHSAMA) Fund Board met recently. The award was established by the Class of 1955. Members of this class pose for a photo at the meeting. The group includes, left to right: John Thompson, who is stepping down as board president; Donna Bennett Chubon; and John Bechakas, all founding members of the award.

When the Kane High School Alumni Memorial Award (KHSAMA) Fund meets in February 2013, it will mark the first time in 28 years that a member of the Class of 1955 has not sat upon that board.
At the May Selection Meeting of the board, President John Thompson, KHS ’55, formally announced that he would be retiring after 16 years of serving on the board.
Thompson, who lives with his wife, Cathy, in Fredericksburg, Va., was honored by the board at a dinner prior to the meeting.  Natalie Dewalt, who also retired from the board after many years of service, was not able to be present for the dinner.
Besides current board members, also in attendance were KHS Class of 1955 and founding KHSAMA Board members, Donna Bennett Chubon, and John Bechakas.  Other founding directors Richard Armstrong and Ruth Johnson were unable to attend.
What began in 1985, as a modest proposal by the KHS Class of 1955, for raising money for a $500 scholarship award for a deserving graduating Kane High School student, has grown far beyond the original plan.
At the graduation of the Kane High School Class of 2012, three $5,000 awards, as well as a $1,000 Rising Senior Award to a former Award winner, entering the senior year of college, were presented by the Kane High School Alumni Memorial Award Fund.
Since the original award was made in 1986 by the Class of 1955, 62 graduates of Kane High School have been granted $149,000. All awards have been funded by money donated by individuals, businesses and KHS classes as memorials or honorariums.
