Kane Marine carries 9/11 flag at tennis event
Kane native Marty Niklas is one of the U.S. Marines chosen to carry the special National 9/11 American flag during a ceremony last week at the BNP Paribas Open professional tennis tournament at Indian Wells, Calif.Private First Class (Pfc.) Niklas is a 2011 graduate of Kane Area High School. He is the leader of his platoon based at the Marine base at 29 Palms, Calif.The National 9/11 Flag is one of the largest American flags to fly above the wreckage at Ground Zero. The flag, destroyed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, has been stitched back together. The flag currently is touring the U.S. before delivery to the National September 11 Memorial Museum.The BNP Paribas Open held a special ceremony last week to honor veterans and military personnel. The ceremony featured the 9/11 flag carried by Niklas and other soldiers.Niklas is the son of Jason and Lisa Lorenzo of Kane and the late Marty Niklas.
