Kane native Mike Myers no longer lives here, but he is connected to his hometown vicariously through customers at his new local laundromat.
Myers sells commercial laundry equipment in western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio.
Seeing Kane go a year without a laundromat of its own, Myers stepped forward to open the Fresh-N-Go Express Laundry at 397 N. Fraley St. adjacent to the Dollar General store. A former laundromat at the same site has been closed for about a year, Myers said.
"It's nice to be able to come back to contribute to your hometown," Myers said. "We're the only laundry in town. I think we'll do well."
The Kane Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday to mark the grand opening of the new self-service coin-operated laundry.
Myers has been selling commercial laundry equipment for about three years. The Kane laundry is his first business venture.
"I wanted to let my town have something nice," Myers said in discussing his decision to open a state-of-the-art laundry in Kane. "I believe a laundry is a necessity in a community."
A 1992 graduate of Kane Area High School, Myers now resides in Sharpsville in Mercer County with his wife, Deana. One of his daughters-- Lauren Myers-- lives in Kane with her mother and is a student at Kane Area High School. His other children include Alec, Luc and Natalie.
Myers said the new Kane laundromat features 18 brand-new washing machines and 16 new clothes dryers. He said one washing machine-- which can do up to eight loads of clothes at one time-- is the largest in McKean County.
"You can do the whole family's laundry right here," Myers said.
Six stainless steel Dexter washing machines are identical to those installed at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Penguins pro hockey team, Myers said.
The laundry is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
The washing machines include one that handles up to 80 pounds, which is popular for the cleaning of large blankets and comforters.
