Kane volleyball vs. Sheffield
The Kane Lady Wolves evened their season record to 2-2 with a 3-game sweep of the Sheffield Wolverines 25-7, 25-15, 25-22.
“We played fairly consistently all night and passed the ball well for the most part," Kane coach Judy Kessler said. "A few of the girls moved around tonight because of an injury so it was nice to see them adapt very well and play as if they’ve been in those spots since the beginning.”
The Wolves controlled game one as they never let Sheffield get more than one or two points in a row while winning the game in five rotations. Audrey Perry had all 3 of the Wolves’ kills within the first four points. The team combined for seven serving aces (Perry 3, Shannon Kocjancic 2) while Morgan Nicholson and Nicole Shrubb each had a block. The Wolves managed leads of 10-4 and 22-7 before finishing off the game with three straight points.
“The flow of the game was very solid and we capitalized on the mistakes that Sheffield made," Kessler said. "Audie had a great 11-point run from the service line and the kids play well at the net. We passed well and the rest followed.”
Although Sheffield made a four point run at the end of the game, the Wolves again controlled the pace of the game as they scored five points in a row twice. Cassie Whittemore (1), Nicholson (1), and Perry (4) combined for six kills. Perry continued to serve well (three aces). Sam Ferranto and Whittemore each picked up an ace with solid serving after Whittemore put down her second kill of the game, Perry put down her second to give her the serve, She served up five points (2 aces) and Nicholson had her kill as the Wolves took a 10-4 lead. Up 13-7, Ferranto served four points (1 ace) while Perry had two more kills. At 23-10, Sheffield picked up four points on a couple of Wolves’ errors but a kill out gave the Wolves back the ball.
In the third game, Sheffield took advantage of the Wolves’ attacking errors after an opening block by Whittemore and a service ace by Ferranto and took their first lead of the match, 5-2. Points traded back and forth to an 11-11 game as the middle attackers Perry and Nicholson put down two kills each. Sideout points happened quickly as the score traded back and forth by a point or two to 20-18. Shrubb had two unassisted kills at the net for a 22-18 lead. But Sheffield fought back to come within a point 22-21. Nicholson’s kill gave the Wolves point 23 and sent her to the service line. Perry then put down two kills for the last two points.
“We passed better tonight and had way fewer serve receive errors than we have been, so that allowed us to run an offense," Kessler said. "Audrey and Morgan were both very effective in the middle. Cassie and Nicole hit well on the outside also. Kaila Jamerson put up some nice sets all night as the secondary setter. It was a good win.”Â
