In May 2011, The Kane Lions Club established the Patriot Award for graduating Kane High Seniors who enlist in the U.S. Military. The Club felt that these young enlistees should be recognized for their upcoming service and sacrifice to America.
Tragically on July 18, Kane's SSGT Kenneth R. VanGiesen gave his life in Afghanistan, participating in Operation Enduring Freedom. In memory of this tragic loss the Lions Club decided to rename this award the SSGT Kenneth R. VanGiesen Patriot Award and to assume stewardship of this important award.
The club will perform fundraising campaigns, look for support from the community and other organizations and accept donations to continue this important award for many years to come.
