Mary Zampogna

January 18, 2013

Mary Zampogna of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on Jan. 15, 2013, following complications from a lengthy battle with dementia.
Mary was born Nov. 29, 1921, in Ludlow, the daughter of Paul and Pearl Straneva. She married Harry J. Zampogna and they moved to San Antonio and later parted ways.
A graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word Nursing School in San Antonio, she was a registered nurse at a local hospital until her retirement in the mid 1980s. Mary was a strong-willed woman who loved conversing with her family and spent many hours telling stories of her interesting life in San Antonio. She was also very talented in the field of music and enjoyed playing the piano and singing.
As a devout Catholic, she attended St. Anthony de Padua Church in San Antonio.
Mary was preceded in death by her former husband, Harry, in 2004. Surviving are many San Antonio friends and cousins and other family members in Pennsylvania. Also surviving is her cousin Rick in Dallas, who assisted and looked after Mary in her last years of life.
Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. Monday in the gathering space at St. Callistus Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Philip Pinczewski, pastor, as celebrant. Private burial will follow at St. Callistus Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Callistus Catholic church or a Catholic charity of choice.
The Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
