More teams sought for Kane Relay For Life

July 23, 2012

The Kane area always has been a major supporter of the annual Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.
This year, however, interest in the major fundraiser appears to have waned.
Only four teams so far have registered to participate in the Relay For Life to be held Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Kane High School track.
"Kane was once very, very big among our Relays," Katie Dupree said Monday. "But this year we only have four teams. That's very low for Kane. Some of our former teams didn't have new people to take over."
Based in Bradford, Dupree is the income development representative for the American Cancer Society region that includes McKean, Cameron and Potter counties. She said the annual Relay is the "signature" fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.
According to Dupree, Kane at one time had more than 20 teams and raised huge amounts of money through the Relay. She said the Kane Relay last year raised only $18,000--  far below its goal of $79,000.
The Kane Relay has a goal of $22,000 this year, Dupree said.
The four teams registered for this year's Relay in Kane include:
*The Westside Walkers headed by cancer survivor Brenda Emer.
*The Kane Educators headed by Julia Anderson and Rae El Johnson.
*The "Walking the Plank" team headed by Sue McAlee and Sally Huckabone.
*The Kane High School Student Council team. Jeff Gibbs, a teacher and council adviser, is coordinating this team.
Dupree said more teams are needed to meet the goal for Kane.
She said teams can register "right up until the day of the Relay." To register or obtain more information, contact Dupree at 368-3646.
