Mr. Robert W. “Bob” McMillen, Sr.
Mr. Robert W. “Bob” McMillen, Sr., 68, peacefully passed into the next life in Hamot Medical Center, Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at 2:50 am following a cerebral-vascular event.A Sheffield area resident for most of his life, Bob was born July 6, 1942, in Nebraska, Pa., to the late Wendell and Mary McClellan McMillen. He graduated from Sheffield High School and was a member of the 1960 undefeated football team where he gained the nickname of “Wheaties.” Following high school, Bob entered the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was a member of the 58th Motor Transport Company when it was the first convoy to make it up Highway 1 to Pleiku.Bob started working in the family business at the age of 16 and retired in 2002 at the closing of McMillen Lumber Company. He was a very active community participant, serving on the Medical Center Board including president for the last several years, a Past Commander of VFW Post No. 8755, Sheffield, an honorary member of Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department, and past President of the Southside TV Association. Wheaties was an active bowler for over 45 years, rolling a perfect 300 in 1990, and a fan fanatic of the Cleveland Browns and Dale Jarrett from NASCAR. Among all these activities, Bob was also known as a wonderful baker, earning a blue ribbon at the Pa. state Farm Show for his chocolate cake, and more recently for his apple pies at the Johnny Appleseed Festival in Sheffield.On May 23, 1964, Bob married Sharon “Sherry” O’Leary at Bethany Lutheran Church, Sheffield. They were married over 46 years and have two children; a daughter, Melanie McMillen, Sheffield; a son, Robert W. McMillen, Jr. and wife Carleena, Cherry Grove and the apples of his eyes, grandchildren Ryan and Cayla. He is also survived by; two sisters, Joyce Olson and husband Russ, Sheffield and Gloria Roell and husband Fred, Sheffield, a brother James McMillen and wife Becky, Sheffield, a brother-in-law Bill Hayes and wife Jean, Sewickley; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, William in infancy and several uncles.A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010 at the Borden-Lloyd Funeral Home. Rev. Donald costlow, pastor, Bethany Lutheran Church and Pastor James Crossley, Cherry Grove Community Church, will officiate at the 11 a.m. service. Burial will follow in Sheffield Cemetery.
