MT. JEWETT – Without more funding, the Mt. Jewett Memorial Public Library could be forced to close its doors in two years.
This was the somber message delivered Monday to the Mt. Jewett Borough Council at its meeting at the borough building on Center Street.
"The library is not going to close tomorrow," Library Director Debbie Deane told council. But she said the library could be forced to close in "two years" if additional funding is not found to cover expenses.
Sue Jefferds, president of the library board, said the dismal financial situation at the library is "not something that happened overnight."
She said the board is trying to come up with other fund-raising ideas to keep the library afloat.
A report presented to council shows that the library had a deficit of $1,713.40 last year. The report lists revenue at $11,401.04 and expenses at $13,114.44.
The report shows that the expenses do not include the salary for Deane. In 2011, she was paid $8,197 by the borough for a 20-hour work week, according to the report.
