At the Nov. 28 meeting of the Mt. Jewett Rotary Club Mike Barnard and Kristin Dillenbeck presented a program on the McKean County Community Service 3G Program. 3G stands for Good, Growing, Gardens. The motto of the program is “Helping others By Helping Ourselves.” The program provides a meaningful alternative to incarceration. Defendants who are placed in the program must complete a specified number of community service hours in order to fulfill the requirements of their probation. Participants in the program work at a number of locations throughout McKean County. One of the main work sites is the garden and the orchard located in Smethport. A majority of the produce raised by the participants goes directly to the McKean County Prison helping to reduce food service costs. Participants also assist in maintaining the McKean County Fairgrounds and produce a variety of cement stepping stones that are for sale at old barn located near the McKean County 911 Center.
