Perry Swanson of Kane named Logger-of-the-Year
JOHNSONBURG – Perry Swanson of Kane has been named as the 2012 Logger-of-the-Year.He received the award Tuesday evening at the 44th annual Loggers and Saw-millers Safety Meeting at the Johnsonburg Fire Hall. More than 100 attended the two-hour program sponsored by the Kane-based Allegheny Hardwood Utilization Group (AHUG)."I'm extremely proud and very honored to receive the award," Swanson said. "I've always wanted to be a logger. Luckily, my dream came true."A 1989 graduate of Kane Area High School, Swanson has been in the logging business for 23 years. He is contracted to Kane Hardwood. Swanson has been trained under the PA Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and has not had a "loss time" accident."Logging is a way of life for Perry and it is evident in both his production and his land ethic," AHUG said in announcing his nomination for the award.Swanson and his wife, Kristin, reside at 421 Haines St., Kane, with their sons Logan, 14, and Lincoln, 11. Swanson is a member of the Kane Elks Lodge, AHUG and the Northeastern Loggers Association. He supports his sons in their activities and sports.Swanson is one of four nominees for the logger-of-the year award. Other nominees include:*Michael Yasurek of Kane. He has worked in the logging business for 20 years. He has worked for Sluga Logging for 12 years. He is SFI trained with no loss time accidents. He is active with his family in church, Little League baseball and Boy Scouts.*Adam Vollmer of Kersey. He has been in the logging business for a decade. He works for private consultants and contracts to St. Marys Lumber. Vollmer, who is SFI trained, has had no loss time accidents. He is active with his children, coaching Little League and T-ball.*Terry Bean of Shinglehouse. He has been in the logging business for 21 years and started his own company nine years ago.
