The Kane VFW Post 1132 held its annual Veterans Day Dinner Saturday, Nov. 12.
After social hour members and guests sat down to a fine dinner put on by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Commander Don Chittester opened the service with a prayer. He was followed by Adjutant Bert Geibel who gave an overview of the services that our local VFW does offer to the community.
Geibel then gave a brief presentation regarding the DAV van available for use. In just a month the club has taken 10 veterans to their appointments, which if you tried to figure out for each individual service saves the veterans around $400.
The primary guest speaker was Vincent R. Martinez, Capt. U.S. Navy. He was born in Syracuse, N.Y. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (seven awards, one for Valor), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon (two awards), Presidential Unit Citation and numerous service and campaign awards.
Martinez noted, "The State of Pennsylvania has 10 percent of all Medal of Honor recipients."
"That is quite an honor you should be very proud of," Martinez said. "Your people when called upon to serve their country come front and center and these numbers do show that."
He also mentioned that the U.S. has military support in 141 out of 192 countries. Capt. Martinez showed a slide brief on different activities and dangers our troops have on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I think that the people need to know what is going on and all the different hazards your family members have to be on the look out for," Martinez.
