Diane Ion (right) of Kane has knitted this beautiful "Remembrance Flag" to honor the memory of Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen, a Kane native killed while serving in Afghanistan last year. Ion, the soon-to-be junior vice commander at the Kane Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), presented the flag on Memorial Day to Sue and Tom VanGiesen (center), parents of the fallen soldier. Leo "Bert" Geibel (left), the VFW adjutant, helps holds the flag. Ion said it took her seven months to knit the flag as a tribute to VanGiesen.
