Robert W. Barber

Robert W. Barber, 86, of Mt. Jewett, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 12, 2011, at his residence. 
Mr. Barber was born on July, 5, 1925 in Hazelhurst, the son of Ernest and Nellie Grimm Barber. He attended school in Hazelhurst and is a Methodist by faith.
A veteran of World War II, he was a seaman first class aboard the USS Spica and served in the South Pacific from July 1943 through September 1946.
Mr. Barber is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Gloria Peters whom he married on Nov. 22, 1952 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mt. Jewett.
He was a former employee at South Penn & Pennzoil Oil Co. and retired from Quaker State Refining Corporation in February 1988.
Mr. Barber was a past Commander of the Mt. Jewett American Legion Post 574 of which he was a life member of 65 years. He was also a life member of the Mt. Jewett Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son Robert L. (Elizabeth) Barber of New Castle; a daughter, Karen Ann Barber of Rockville, Md. and two grandchildren, Robert and Brittani Lee of New Castle, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen Barber and Ernest “Pat” Barber; and four sisters, Harriet Hulings, Ruth Isadore, Lucille Sipe and Dorothy Caldwell.
Friends will be received at the Cummings Funeral Home in Mt. Jewett on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Mt. Jewett with the Rev. W. Craig Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Bridgeview Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
