JAMES CITY – The Highland Township Board of Supervisors appears pleased so far with work by Seneca Resources to upgrade township roads.
Speaking at a board meeting Wednesday, Supervisor Charlie Vaughn said Seneca has "double tar-and-chipped" Pig's Ear Road from the Shriner's Club to Four Corners.
"We have a high-speed road," Vaughn said in describing the improvements to the dirt road off Routes 66/948.
Vaughn, who also serves as the township roadmaster, said Seneca also has installed blacktop on sections of the road in Sackett.
Seneca uses Pig's Ear Road and Owl's Nest Road in the township to access its Marcellus Shale natural gas well operation near Owl's Nest. Seneca also is using Pig's Ear Road to access a well site near Duhring in Forest County. Vaughn said this route is being used because a bridge on Duhring Road is "not adequate."
According to Vaughn, Seneca plans to widen the intersection at Pig's Ear Road and Routes 66/948. He said the company also plans to work with the township to upgrade the bridge at Pig's Ear that carries heavy trucks across the East Branch of Spring Creek.
Ken Painter, who lives on Pig's Ear Road, asked Vaughn to tell Seneca to "spring for a new bridge" at Pig's Ear.
Vaughn said the Pig's Ear bridge "has taken a lot of weight the past few years" and needs work.
