“It’s pretty amazing!”
That’s how meteorologist Aaron Tyburski describes the Monday-Tuesday snowstorm in the Kane area.
“It’s the biggest storm of the season,” Tyburski said Tuesday. He said the storm dumped between six and eight inches of snow on the area.
The meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in State College said some areas near Kane might have received less than six inches. On the other hand, he said some areas received more than eight inches.
Tyburski said the Monday-Tuesday storm ranks first in snowfall for all snow events in the 2011-12 winter season that began last October. The previous two-day high mark was 6.8 inches of snow Feb. 12-13, the weatherman said.
Tyburski also said this is the latest date in April for a significant snowfall since 1928 when between 12 and 18 inches of snow fell in Kane.
He said the two-day storm this week dumped 23.7 inches of snow on parts of Somerset County.
The meteorologist said substantial heavy wet snow accumulated on grassy areas where Kane area residents were mowing lawns just a few days ago. He said snow also accumulated on trees and bushes. He said winds between 20 and 30-mph with higher gusts caused some trees to topple.
The Kane Area School District called for a two-hour delay in the start of classes Tuesday. A school spokesman said the delay was due primarily to downed trees that blocked several roads traveled by school buses.
The two-hour delay in the start of classes was the first of the school year. Due to the unusually mild winter, Kane has had zero “snow days” in the current school year.
