Tornadoes take South Division crown

October 17, 2011

The Kane Tornado 10-11-year-olds claimed the South Division Championship and advanced to the Olean Youth Football League Championship Game by defeating an undefeated Coudersport squad by a 12-0 count Saturday at Coudersport.
Rain, wind, cold and tough defense were the order of the day for almost the entire first half as neither team could reach the end zone.
The Tornadoes finally got untracked late in the second quarter and behind the running of Ray Maze, J.T. Stewart and Ange Costanzo, marched to the Coudy 20-yard line. From the 20-yard line, quarterback Reed Williams rolled left and threw a strike to Ben Reynolds who found his way into the end zone for a 6-0 Tornadoes' lead. The Kane defense kept Coudy off the scoreboard for the rest of the quarter and the Tornadoes took a 6-0 lead into halftime.
The second half was almost a carbon copy of the first as both teams continued to play tough defense and the offenses moved in fits and starts. Once again, it was the Tornadoes who proved to be the better mudders as they began a fourth quarter drive that would lead to the clinching touchdown. Again the Kane 11 relied on the running game for most of the drive as they moved steadily down field to a first down at the Coudy 12 .
Two tough runs by Costanzo took the ball to the 5-yard line and Maze then raced into the end zone to give the Tornadoes a 12-0 lead with four minutes left in the game. Coudersport took possession following the second Kane touchdown and managed to drive to the Tornado 40-yard line but the Kane defense again took control, halted the drive and turned it over to the offense to run out the clock on a hard fought, hard earned win.
