The Staff Sgt. Kenneth R. VanGiesen Patriot Award has been presented to four Kane High graduating seniors who are entering military service. Taking part in the award presentation at commencement earlier this month are, left to right: Frank Sirianni, a member of the Kane Lions Club, steward of the award; Travis Hollabaugh, Gunnar Emberg, William Hulings, Emily Steele, the four recipients of a $500 award; Tom VanGiesen, father of the Kane soldier who was killed in Afghanistan last July while serving with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard; and Aimee VanGiesen Gullifer, sister of the soldier. Sirianni also is the father of Erin Sirianni, long-time girlfriend of the soldier. Sirianni led efforts to create the Patriot Award last year to salute graduating seniors who are entering military service. The award was renamed in honor of the soldier, a graduate of Kane Area High School. The recipients of the award at commencement received a standing ovation from the large crowd in the high school auditorium.
