MT. JEWETT – The entire length of Division Street in the borough of Mt. Jewett will be paved this summer.
By Ted Lutz Republican Staff MT. JEWETT – The entire length of Division Street in the borough of Mt. Jewett will be paved this summer. Acting at its meeting Monday, the Mt. Jewett Borough Council voted 6-0 to accept a bid of $105,688.50 from IA Construction of Franklin. The bid includes the removal of the old surface through “milling” and the installation of new blacktop paving. Council President Chuck Paar and Councilmen Pete Crowley, Don Martyna, Brett Morgan, Wil Antrim and “Chip” Lannen approved the bid. Councilman Paul Ewing did not attend the meeting. The bid was one of two received. Glenn Hawbaker of State College submitted a bid of $114,703.50. Council at one time discussed splitting the Division Street paving project into two parts. The bids came in for the entire length of the street within the borough limits and council decided to go with the project. To help finance the paving, council agreed to use $31,366.11 in certificates of deposit, which mature June 17. The borough also will use $35,069.11 in liquid fuel tax revenue for the paving work. Remaining funds from the 2008 budget also will be used for the paving, according to Secretary-Treasurer Barb Harp. In other business at the 80-minute meeting, council: *Received notice that Kaffe Sol, a Mt. Jewett business, donated meals for an “employee appreciation lunch” at the borough building. *Received notice that the summer reading program will begin Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mt. Jewett Fire Hall. *Received notice that Christy Saf has resigned as president of the library board. *Heard Paar announce that the Mt. Jewett Charter School Coalition will send a “delegation” to Harrisburg for a hearing hosted by the state Charter School Appeals Board. Following the June 16 hearing, the Appeals Board will rule on an application to create a charter school in Mt. Jewett. The appeal was filed after the Kane School Board rejected the charter school application. “We’re hoping for an early decision,” Paar said in reference to a ruling by the Charter Appeals Board. *Discussed a decision by Knox Energy to cut off natural gas service to Kushequa. The cooperative took the action because of the exorbitant cost of replacing the lines from Mt. Jewett to Kushequa. Paar said he is concerned that Knox someday could decide to cut off gas to Mt. Jewett. Mike Holtz of Kane is the area representative on the cooperative based in Ohio. Holtz is expected to be invited to attend the next borough council meeting to discuss the cooperative’s plans. *Agreed to participate in a summer help program sponsored by the state Department of Labor. According to discussion, Mark Ambrose of Hazel Hurst is expected to work for the borough public works department for about two months. *Discussed a problem with the failure of vehicles to stop for pedestrians who are trying to cross Main Street (Route 6) at designated crosswalks. Patrick McGuire, chairman of the Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority, told council that he has filed “repeated” complaints about vehicle violations at crosswalks. He said some motorists “act like you’re a target” for them as they drive through the crosswalks while pedestrians are crossing the street. Morgan called for a “crackdown” by borough Police Officer Nataliya Miroslavna. Paar believes the police car should be “more visible on Main Street” to deter motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalks. *Received notice that Building Inspector Don Warren has sent warning letters to owners of dilapidated buildings. *Heard Mayor Tom Geer report that the Boy Scouts placed American flags along Main Street for Memorial Day.
