Participants of the Worship Arts workshops at Olmstead Manor in Ludlow presented a concert titled “Near to the Heart of God” Wednesday at Kane First United Methodist Church. The week-long workshop featured sessions in techniques related to choir, organ and handbells. Those attending the workshop were organists, choir directors and music ministers from area churches. After a prelude by organist Paul Staley, the audience sang an opening song while members of the handbell choir entered, ringing bells decorated with colored ribbons. In between the formal music presentations, the evening also included psalms that invited all to praise God in song, New Testament readings, and prayers led by workshop chaplain Rev. Barry Lewis. The 20-member choir, directed by Brian A. Bogey, presented the selections “Thee Will I Love” and “We Are God’s Family.” Luella Grieger gave a dramatic presentation from her series “Women from the Bible,” portraying the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well. She explained the cultural tensions between Jews and Samaritans gave examples of the brokenness that Jesus healed. Handbell choir director Sue Garton performed two solos. During her second song, she connected several bells by their hands to create a bell tree and hung them on a support. She played end of song by striking the bell tree with mallets. Both handbell and vocal choir joined together for the final anthem, “When in Our Music God is Glorified.”
