State budget still worrisome for Sorg

Longtime Elk County Commissioner June H. Sorg expressed her worries yesterday  morning during a board of commissioners meeting as state government officials remain at a standstill with the state budget.
"We hope that they will continue to work together and pass a state budget," Sorg said. "Some of the commissioners from the state association have met with the governor, two weeks ago I think it was, we were down in Harrisburg and we talked with them, and stressed the importance of the human service side for the county."
According to an Associated Press story, more cutbacks may be needed as Gov. Ed Rendell speculated that 800 state employees may have to be laid off. According to Rendell, the layoffs will save the state $25 million.
But on a local level, according to Sorg, any cutbacks will prove costly to Elk County.
"Not only that, but also our prison as well and all the different agencies, just different policies and providers that we work with, how this budget is going to hurt their budgets as well," Sorg said. "We were talking with a lot of our local agencies and they were concerned about cutting back on services, which isn't a good thing for our area.
"Hopefully, the legislators and the governor will come together and pass a good budget that will help all the counties and all the people of Pennsylvania."
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, seven states, including Arizona, Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania either 'experienced delays or had to extend their sessions to deliberate on the (state) budget.'
Pennsylvania officials failed to adopt a budget on time for the seventh straight year.
