By Ted Lutz Staff Writer HAZEL HURST – Two candidates are seeking election Tuesday to a seat on the three-member Board of Supervisors for Hamlin Township. Robert “Bob” Okerlund of Route 6, Marvindale, is the Democratic candidate. John H. Moffett of Red Brick Road, Kushequa, is the Republican candidate. They are seeking the seat now held by Tom Kreiner of Hazel Hurst. Kreiner, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, announced earlier this year that he would not seek another term. He has served on the board for 12 years. A 1968 graduate of Smethport High School, Okerlund has lived in Hamlin Township since 1973. He retired in 2004 after a 35-year career with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). He held the title of assistant county maintenance manager at the time of his retirement. He now is a school bus driver in the Smethport School District. Okerlund served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam War. He is a member of the East Smethport United Christian Church where he has held the offices of Sunday School superintendent and CYC youth leader. He sings in the church choir and is a soloist. Since 1965, Okerlund has been an active member of the McKean County Fair Association. He is the treasurer on the executive board for the fair. Okerlund and his wife, Joanie have been married for 36 years and have a son, Dave, a daughter, Lisa and two grandchildren. Moffett, 64, has lived in Hamlin Township since his family moved to Hazel Hurst when he was five years old. He currently serves on the township’s Board of Auditors. Moffett is a 1963 graduate of Smethport High School. He graduated cum laude from Clarion University with a degree in speech communications and theatre. A former professional actor, Moffett is retired. He formerly operated heavy equipment and was involved in logging. He also has taught courses at Clarion University. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. For five years, he served as commandant of the Marine Corps League Bob Swanson Detachment #1102 in Mt. Jewett. For four years, Moffett served as vice commandant of the Marine Corps League of Northwest Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Smethport, the Mt. Jewett American Legion, the Kane Eagles Club and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mt. Jewett. Moffett has a son, John Moffett Jr., a daughter, Courtney Hooks and five grandchildren.
