There’s a race for Highland Township supervisor in Tuesday’s general election.
By Ted Lutz Staff Writer JAMES CITY – There’s a race for Highland Township supervisor in Tuesday’s general election. The township’s two polling places — the fire hall in James City and the Snowseekers Club in Highland — will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Incumbent Charlie Vaughn, a Democrat, is seeking election to his third six-year term as supervisor. Fred Gezik, a Republican, is the challenger. Both candidates reside in James City. Vaughn, who serves as chairman of the three-member township Board of Supervisors, has served as supervisor for 14 years. He was appointed to a two-year term before winning election to his first six-year term. Vaughn has been the township roadmaster for 11 years. A 1954 graduate of Kane High School, Vaughn served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years and was deployed overseas for two years. For 41 years, Vaughn worked on construction projects as a member of Operating Engineers Local 66 of Pittsburgh. Vaughn is a member of the Kane American Legion and the First United Methodist Church in Kane. Vaughn and his wife, the former Jackie Vanderneck, reside on Pennsylvania Avenue in James City. Vaughn’s children include three sons, Robert and Matthew of James City and Douglas of Warren, and one daughter, Tammy Bostjancic of Warren. He has two grandchildren. Gezik and his wife, the former Deborah Walker, reside on West Virginia Avenue in James City. Gezik has a daughter, Karie Hoffman of Glen Dale, Md., and two grandchildren. A 1969 graduate of Kane High School, Gezik served in the U.S. Navy for eight years. He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Kane. He is a member of the Hi-La Sportsmen’s Club in Russell City. Gezik worked for several years in the local logging industry. He is a former log procurement manager. Unlike many area townships with empty ballot spots for constable, Highland has a candidate for the position in Tuesday’s election. Joe Nicklas of Sackett is seeking election to a six-year term as Highland Township constable. He holds both the Democratic and the Republican lines on the ballot.
