MT. JEWETT – Christmas trees and holiday lighting displays are shining
in what otherwise would be dark, vacant storefronts along Main Street
in Mt. Jewett.
Bill Keesler is heading an “Exploratory Committee” that is encouraging businesses and storefront owners on Main Street to decorate their windows for the Christmas season. “We’ve had a very good response,” Keesler said. “We believe the decorated storefronts will enhance the holiday spirit in downtown Mt. Jewett and create that special warm and fuzzy Christmas feeling.” Decorating the storefronts for the Christmas season “is not a contest,” the Exploratory Committee points out in its flyer on the event. According to the committee, businesses and property owners also may wish to donate their storefront space for use by local organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and church groups. The decorated windows are expected to be completed by Monday and remain in place through Jan. 1. Keesler said the Exploratory Committee also is trying to determine if there is “sufficient interest” to create a business organization in Mt. Jewett. He believes that such an organization could “move Mt. Jewett forward.” Joining Keesler on the Exploratory Committee are Ona Paar and high school student Serena Sluga, who is the junior councilperson on the Mt. Jewett Borough Council.
