Individuals looking for a way to recycle bottle caps now have the option to turn them in to one of Aveda’s network of salons and stores. There is no monetary or other incentive for collecting and turning in the caps, but recycling them will keep them out of landfills. In particular, Aveda offers a program for schools to collect plastic bottle caps and receive free shipping labels for disposal. Schools interested in participating in the program are able to register by following instructions on Aveda’s Web site, www.aveda.com, and the company will send them shipping labels. Aveda then uses the caps to make new caps and containers. A listing of Aveda’s stores and salons is also available on the organization’s Web site. Colleen Fitzwater, American Cancer Society Vice President of Marketing and Communications in Philadelphia, noted that there is a link from cancer.org to Aveda’s Web site discussing their bottle cap recycling program. There is currently a hoax circulating throughout the area claiming that plastic bottle caps can be exchange for free chemotherapy treatments. Aveda’s program provides individuals with an environmentally-friendly way to dispose of the caps. “It doesn’t raise money however,” Fitzwater said. Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner indicated that she was unaware of any area schools that had tried implementing such a program.
